Bagel Dogs are a fun main dish or snack! These homemade everything bagel dogs are a not so guilty version made with whole wheat fresh milled flour and a hot dog of your choice.
Jump to RecipeWe prefer a cheesy hot dog in the middle of these, so we like to use Nathan’s Cheddar Cheese Beef Franks. You can use whatever brand you want, cheese or no cheese, etc. You can even leave the bagel dough plain or use other seasonings or cheese. It’s very customizable.
This recipe starts with my Basic Bread Recipe with Fresh Milled Flour. You’ll want to bookmark or print and keep around as a versatile base! You can take that one recipe and make: loaves, dinner rolls, hamburger/hot dog buns, cinnamon rolls, doughnuts and the list goes on.
How To Make Everything Bagel Dogs
- Make the Basic Bread Dough Made with Fresh Milled Flour. Find the recipe here and include the everything bagel seasoning.
- Let your dough rise until doubled. (about an hour)
- Punch down measure out 8-4oz pieces on a kitchen scale. (If you don’t have one just eyeball it)
- Make a flat, oblong shape with your dough to wrap your hot dog. Pinch bottom seam together. *Make sure you pinch your seam very good so they are sealed and don’t break open when boiling or baking*
- Put on a parchment lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for 20 minutes.
- While rising, preheat the oven to 375 degrees F, bring a pot of water to a boil with 2 tbsp. of baking soda.
- Boil for 1 minute and put back onto the baking sheet. Then egg wash and sprinkle more everything seasoning on top.
- Bake for 25 minutes and enjoy!
A single batch of the Basic Bread Recipe made 8 bagel dogs and I had enough dough left for 3 bagels.
Why Do I Boil The Bagel Dogs?
Boiling before baking is what makes a bagel a bagel. If you didn’t boil it, it would essentially be like a roll or bun texture. This isn’t a horrible thing, but if you’re looking for the chewy bagel crust boiling is a MUST!
You will want to add baking soda to the water to create the brown, pretzel-like exterior of the bagel dog. In my main bagel recipe it calls for honey or brown sugar in the water. It really doesn’t matter what you choose, but here are the differences:
Honey/Brown Sugar– Gives a slight sweetness, but nothing super noticeable. It also helps the bagel brown a little in the oven.
Baking Soda– Adding baking soda alkalizes the water (increases pH) and creates a nice dark brown color in the oven.
In the end choose what sounds best to you. You will still enjoy your bagels the same!
