This easy recipe for sourdough cheddar biscuits with fresh milled flour is quick to throw together for a side! Serve with cheesy mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese! They’re soft on the inside, with a nice golden, slightly crunchy outside.
Jump to RecipeGrowing up on special occasions we would go to Red Lobster. I didn’t like sea food so I would resort to chicken and their delicious cheddar biscuits!
Fast forward to now and who knew those little tasty biscuits were so easy to make at home! In this recipe I used soft white wheat flour that I milled in my Komo Mio mill. I’ve also swapped and used fresh milled Einkorn flour in it’s place and it works! No need to change the ratio.
What You’ll Need To Make Sourdough Cheddar Biscuits with Fresh Milled Flour
Mixing Bowl
Flour: I used soft white wheat berries. You can also swap for Einkorn.
Sourdough Starter: Can be fed or discard
Baking Powder
Salt
Honey
Garlic Powder
Cheese: I like to use cheddar, but you can use any cheese you like.
Oil: I used olive oil
Butter: For brushing the tops of biscuits. I used salted butter so if you use unsalted you might need to adjust your salt unless you’re reducing salt on purpose.
To Get Started
First, preheat your oven to 400 degrees fahrenheit. These come together quickly so for the fluffiest biscuit don’t make your biscuit dough until your oven is very close to being preheated. That way your baking powder reaction doesn’t deflate.
In a mixing bowl add flour, salt, garlic powder, and baking powder. Give it a quick mix to combine. I like to use my danish dough whisk, but you can use a wooden spoon, too.
Then add sourdough starter, oil, and honey. I like to do oil first so the honey just slips out of the measuring spoon.
Start mixing, add cheese, and finish mixing until thoroughly combined, but don’t overmix.
Using a spoon or your hand, drop biscuits onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. I just separate by hand into 8 pieces. You can do smaller or bigger you’ll just need to adjust cooking time.
Bake your biscuits for 9-11 minutes, until golden brown on the tops. If you made them smaller or bigger adjust time accordingly.
While biscuits are baking, melt butter in a small saucepan then add parsley, garlic powder and salt.
Remove biscuits and brush butter mixture on and enjoy!
