This delicious apple crumb coffee cake made with fresh milled flour is so easy to throw together! You can also use ANY flavor of pie filling you want, not just apple.

This recipe is a favorite of ours and I love that you can use any pie filling flavor interchangeably. You can use store-bought or pie filling you’ve canned yourself.
If using apple pie filling you could easily take it to the next level and drizzle caramel sauce over it to make a caramel apple version.
When using cherry pie filling almond extract will make the cherry flavor pop in place of the vanilla extract.
If you have other tasty flavor combinations feel free to add a comment at the bottom of this post.

Apple Crumb Coffee Cake Made With Fresh Milled Flour
Ingredients
- 360 grams fresh milled soft white wheat flour (approx. 3 3/4 cup)
- 3 tsp baking powder
- 170 grams butter, melted (3/4 cup)
- 180 grams milk (3/4 cup)
- 150 grams sugar (3/4 cup)
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 3 eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 can apple pie filling, 21oz. (or flavor of your choice)
- 1/4 cup finely crushed nuts for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 325℉. Grease a 9×13 pan. (I used a stainless steel cake pan greased with butter.)
- In a large mixing bowl add flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk together until combined.
- Add in melted butter and using a fork, whisk, or your hands stir together until crumbly. Break up the larger crumbs.
- Set aside 1/2 cup of the crumb mixture.
- In a small bowl whisk your eggs, milk, and vanilla together and add the mixture to the crumb mixture. Stir until combined. There will be clumps and that's okay!
- Pour the batter into prepared pan. Dribble your pie filling over the cake evenly. Sprinkle the 1/2 cup of crumbs that you set aside over the pie filling and bake at 325℉ for 40-45 minutes. (This may vary with ovens and pan used.)
- Remove from oven, cool on a cooling rack, cut into squares, and serve. *You can eat it warm if you'd like. We do and it stays together well.*
Excited to taste this! I just made the cherry version. I really like how the crumble topping was part of the mixture! Just a heads up the directions don’t mention the vanilla extract, so I totally forgot to put it in.
Thanks for the heads up! I just updated that. I love using cherry pie filling for this! I personally like the cherry more than the apple.
This was so yummy! Nice to have another way to use up apples other than pie.
Yes, agreed! Thanks!
So easy to put together with pie filling. Love that the fruit goes on the top so you can add as much as you want. I used a jar of Amish blueberry pie filling. This is a great take to pot luck or family reunion supper. Thanks for the recipe, I have made several of your recipes and none have disappointed.
Aww thanks! I’m so glad to hear that!
